View-Master
The View-Master has a long history, originally debuting in 1939 as a stereoscopic device that let kids (and adults) experience 3D images on circular reels. Fast forward to 2015, and Mattel, in collaboration with Google, reimagined the classic toy into a virtual reality experience, bridging generations of play with modern technology.
I had the opportunity to join this top-secret relaunch project while working on Mattel’s games team. At the time, the company didn’t have internal UI or UX designers, so I raised my hand, knowing I had the skillset and passion for the challenge. From there, I touched nearly every aspect of the relaunch—from branding and packaging to product graphics and app design. It was a full-circle moment for me as a designer, bringing the concept to life from the earliest sketches all the way through to mechanicals.
I partnered with Frima, an external app developer, to bring the UI and UX I created for the apps to life. We worked closely to ensure the game and app experiences delivered that unique blend of nostalgia and cutting-edge technology that the View-Master represents.
